The Granary
Victorian warehouse transformed into artist live-work spaces
The Granary presented a compelling challenge: how to create intimate, functional living spaces within a vast industrial shell without erasing its powerful character. Our approach was one of careful insertion — freestanding timber volumes placed within the existing brick envelope, creating a dialogue between old and new.
Original cast-iron columns, timber trusses, and brick arches were meticulously restored and left exposed. New interventions are deliberately legible: cross-laminated timber pods housing bedrooms and bathrooms sit independently of the historic fabric, connected by open mezzanine walkways that preserve sightlines through the full depth of the building.
